Back Pain when Breathing

Most people are breathing incorrectly thus experiencing back pain when breathing.   They have tried lots of pain relievers and techniques to remove the pain but it returns as fast as it goes.

This back pain when breathing is not common to all because not everybody is conscious that they are breathing in an incorrect way.  When a person inhales in a shallow manner it leads to the tightening of the body muscles.  This includes back muscles which would result to back pain breathing.

Using the diaphragm properly will result to diaphragmatic breathing, if not, back pain when breathing is experienced by a person. The diaphragm is the dome-shaped muscle which can be located at the lowest portion of the lungs. This helps in breathing air into the lungs and then releases it.  The abdominal muscle also helps in clearing out air as the person breathes. If the muscles are not used correctly, shallow breathing occurs.  It can be considered as atrophied or chronically tight which leads to “losing breath” easily and back pain breathing.

Shallow breathing, also known as paradoxical breathing, can cause sharp pain breathing back.  They can also be known as chest breathers because only the chests move when breathing. When the muscles tighten and shorten, like the back extensors, they do not allow the diaphragm to move freely because they alter the position of the rib cage. The muscle would have a hard time relaxing if the diaphragm cannot fully contract and expand.  The ribcage would move upward and downward like a static unit instead of the ribs contracting with each breath.  This could lead to back pain while breathing.

There are numerous problems brought about by paradoxical breathing. The lack of movement of the correct muscles could interfere with elimination, digestion or menstrual cycle and intra-abdominal pressure.  It could also lead to constant tightening of muscles, usually at the chest and neck, which is to assist in respiration, but not to get the role of the diaphragm.  These muscles are in the neck (scalenes), in the chest (pectoralis major and minor), muscles that wraps around the ribcage (serratus anterior) and the muscles in the back (serratus posterior superior and inferior). Most of the times it is the back pain difficulty breathing because it also affects lower back muscles.  Most people are complaining about their back hurting when  breathing deeply or sleeping, they should be sensitive enough to comprehend that the back pain while breathing is caused by incorrect breathing.

Learning to breathe correctly would help reduce back pain when breathing.  When starting, it is best to practice lying down.  As a person progresses, one can practice it while sitting on a chair.   At first, learning to breathe diaphragmatically is may be difficult because the muscle has not been undergoing exercise for an extensive span of time resulting to back pain breathing.  However, with thorough practice it would be easier.  This should help remove back pain when breathing and the sharp pain breathing back and decrease complaints related to back pain difficulty.
