Back and Hip Pain

Back and hip pain is a condition that is carefully evaluated by physicians to determine the nature and the cause for each and every patient.

Hip back pain could be a result of joint sprain, fracture or muscle strain which are related to the spinal vertebrae.  To prevent back hip pain, a person can strengthen his muscles.  Usually back and hip pain is caused by weak muscles. For example, a weak abdominal muscle could lead to back pain because its main function is to support the back.  If one has weak abdominal muscles, it could lead to a sway back posture which could increase stress on the lower back.  This would lead to lots of problems like herniated discs, arthritis or bulging.

A severe hip and back pain could possibly need a surgical procedure.  This is called the total hip procedure.  This involves the hip joint which would include total replacement of the rounded acetabular cavity which receives the head of a femur (ball and socket) and the head of the femur itself. After this surgery, a rehabilitation program with a good therapist would help expedite the cure.

It is important to identify the pattern which causes the pain.  The patient would suffer longer with the hip and back pain if it would take longer for the doctor to realize what causes the pain.  This hip and back pain pattern is very symbolic which requires immediate resolution.  Usual questions that the doctor asks would be the following:  Is the pain coming from the hip or from the back?  Or is it both hip and back pain?  It is important to understand that the low back and hip joint are intertwined mechanically.  The low back actually accords support from the hip to preserve its structure while the hip joint provides support from the low back for its mechanical integrity.

There are different kinds of pain involving the hips and the back.  These are the back groin hip pain, back pain right hip, back hip pelvic pain, back hip testicular pain and the back hip knee pain.

The back groin hip pain is most of the time caused by ligament weakness or injury.  This is often because of the referred pain from loose hip ligament which is called iliolumbar ligaments (ligament laxity) located in the pubic symphysis (public joint ligament).  Less common causes are enlarged lymph glands, kidney stones, tumor, hernia or infection.

Usually back pain right hip could be felt when a person is sitting for a long time.  This is possible because there is a significant pressure which is twice or thrice the body weight on the lower back.  The hip flexor and hamstrings are also affected because the muscles tighten up due to prolonged sitting. This actually causes a chain reaction.  The lower  back muscles and the lower spine are tugged by the hip flexors which causes the pelvis to move forward and the low back muscles are shortened.
